About one minute later he was sitting on the couch between us. I know that this isn’t exactly baby insomnia–this is voluntarily choosing not to lie down and sleep–but I have noticed that it has a lot in common with the insomnia he actually did have as an infant. It is caused by restlessness, and a mind that would rather be thinking about exciting things than buckling down to the business of relaxing and resting.

I was worried that we were in for a long, hard fight with him over the next month. But honestly I was very relieved when after a week he was pretty agreeable about bedtime. Here is the pattern: we brush his teeth, read him a few stories, turn out the light, and close his door. Then he gets up and comes into our room, pretending like he doesn’t know we just put him to bed.

The first time he gets up, we say “No, it’s bed time” and put him back in his bed. About 50% of the the time, he gets up again. The second time he gets up, we pick him up and carry him back to his room without talking to him.

He’s getting the idea. I have heard some horrific stories from wide-eyed and pale-faced parents who seem to age a year a week while their children refuse to sleep, or refuse to stay asleep.

For us, consistency has been the key, but I know we’ve been lucky. If you keep experimenting, you will eventually find something that works. Once you know what works, your best shot at insomnia relief is simply to keep doing that thing. Stick to the rituals. Stick to the habits. Do not let the child associate teeth brushing and evening story time with anything other than going to bed. The less that we have given in, the easier it has gotten, even though it was not easy at first.
