A Mom’s Favorite Baby Bibs

Babies are messy eaters.  Somewhere buried in an old photo album we probably all have that baby picture of the time we tried to eat spaghetti or some other equally messy food.  Getting food all over the place is just part of being a baby learning to eat.  Part of being the parent of a baby learning to eat is to buy and use many baby bibs to help control the mess.  Bibs are available in a wide variety of colors and styles to suit all of a growing baby’s needs.

Bib Features

Baby bibs can be divided into categories by several different features.  The easiest distinction to notice is material.  What are you looking for in a bib?  Are you planning to use the bib during feeding to wipe food off the baby’s face or is the bib there primarily to protect baby’s clothes from dribbles and messy eating?  Cloth bibs are much better when it comes to wiping things, but they also require more work to clean.  Plastic or vinyl bibs protect clothing well and can be rinsed off in the sink, but they won’t absorb spills or wipe anything clean.  You will also want to look at how the bib fastens around baby’s neck.  Is it tie, button, snap, or Velcro?  Ties make some parents nervous about getting a bib too tight or having the tie catch on something and pose a choking hazard.  Velcro is easiest to fasten, but it can easily be pulled apart and will wear out faster than any other type of fastener.  You should also look at the lower edge of the bib.  Some baby bibs have a small pocket or lip at the bottom to keep spilled foods from dripping off the bib and onto the clothes below.

The Cute Part

Most baby bibs are designed to be cute.  They’ll have saying such as “I love Mommy” or colorful pictures on them.  If you know the right source, you can get a personalized bib, just like you can get personalized baby blankets.  You may also choose to get themed bibs for your child such as all the characters from the Winnie the Pooh stories or Snoopy and his friends.  There are also Disney character bibs, and bibs with little dots, flowers, or color patterns that are good for hiding stains.  Of course, the most important quality of the bib is durability.  Any bib that can be washed repeatedly and still look like new is a good bib.
